Logan Kelley Recital Hour November 2

Recital Hour Nov 2

Sadie C- The sound ends up a little far back, which lets it fall into a nasal space at times. She has a consistent tone across the range. I would like to see a bit more motion in the line, which I think would release the voice.

Lauren C- She looks more focused on the voice than performing the song, especially in the first few measures when the physicality seemed to be more focused on getting the voice moving. As she sings lower, the sound loses the focus that she has in her mid and upper range. She seems stuck in a lighter register of the voice. There is a really nice shimmer throughout the sound that especially opens up in the higher end.

Archer D- I can hear a resonance shift wanting to happen around the C4. About half of the time he is able to work over this, then he is able sing into the higher register with ease. This got more consistent as the song progressed. When the sound gets in a high resonant pocket, everything works easily. Because he is adding elements of a pop style into this, the resonance doesn’t always land in that pocket.

Tanner D- I love how he started performing from the first moment of the accompaniment. I can see some movement in the jaw and throat. It seems like that might be used as a means to control the pitch right now. Because of this, the sound doesn’t always find the release and motion that it needs on the more sustained lines.

Lily G- The song sounded like it set a little low in her range. She lost some of the focus as the song got lower. On some of the larger leaps there was some disconnect between the areas of the voice. Most of what is happening vocally sounds like it is occurring high in the body and not deeply grounded in a lower place.

Hannah H- The sound pops the most on the [e] vowel. She is able to access more space whenever this happens. Overall the space feels relatively closed off in the back, which seems to be making it hard for her to find good vowels on the higher notes.

Emily H- I would work with her to access a taller space. This seems easier for her higher in the range, but the sound gets a little shallow and spread in the lower sections. Bringing this space and a similar resonance lower into her range would open up that area in her voice.

Cassie I- She sounds the most comfortable in the highest area of her range. She has a bright sound, but it doesn’t lose depth as she sings. Occasionally the sound will lose focus, but she is always able to find it again. The sound seems to be more private than public. I would love for her to lean in and let more escape in the higher passages.

Jessie K- I’m used to hearing this song with a lot of weight. For the most part she seemed to lean into a lighter jazzy sound. I love how she was able to access and control so many contrasting timbres. When she was speaking it sat in a naturally low, resonant space. I would love to see this translate into the lower range of her voice. The performance was absolutely delightful.

Miranda M- There is a lot of movement from the jaw and mouth. It looks like she is wanting to control her voice with those mechanisms. I would love to see what would happen if these areas were to relax and if she were able to find more lift and engagement internally.

Brynlee D- When she worked up to the high notes the space immediately closed off from when she was singing in the lower range. She has a great resonance leading up to there, and I think could carry that into the higher area. Opening up the vowel there would help as well. I think it is supposed to be [o], but it comes across more like a schwa or [u]. She sang with that much power in that range later in the song, so it seems the problem is either the vowel or the melody itself.

Overall this lesson was incredibly exciting. A lot of things I've been struggling with the last couple weeks clicked into place for me. ...
