Annika-McCoy-Chapter 5

 Summary:

  • Our individual sound is more directly related to our resonance than our larynx.
  • Overtones- additional frequencies present in a complex tone that are higher than Fo.
  • Free resonance- relies on the free vibration of air molecules within a hollow space within a hollow space through which sound may enter  and exit.

  • Forced resonance- when a physical object vibrates together with the vocal folds.

  • Formants- resonances of the vocal tract; serve as amplifiers.

  • Harmonics are amplified by formants.

  • Slightly adjusting vowel sounds can help fix harmonics and formants.

Application: Our resonance drives our sound, so it only makes sense to help resonance if a sound isn’t “clicking.” In a choral setting, when voices have to mix together and blend, adjusting formants and harmonics allows the resonance to balance. Knowing how to execute this helps immensely when working with singers, whether individually or in group settings.
