Summary:
There are several layers of skin built in to protect the vocal folds. The larynx is almond shaped and completely protected from the outside by layers of complex cartilages. The vocal folds function like rubber bands and lay flat, they aren't positioned like vertical cords down the throat. When a singer can sing with a balanced onset, they will achieve the healthiest tone and balance between airflow and pressure in the glottus. Singers should strive to find a balance between a pressed and a breathy sound. They can manipulate airflow to correct these habits in themselves and their students.
Application:
Understanding the anatomy surrounding the vocal folds will lead to more efficient teaching. Knowing this information will help me identify unhealthy habits and know the technical reasons why they should be fixed. I love how this chapter focuses on identifying causes of extremes in the sound. I will have the greatest chance of success by focusing on the anatomical reasons for what is happening. I have always known that I sometimes have a pressed sound, so this helps me realize the cause and know exactly what I can do physiologically to solve this problem.
