It seems to me that master teachers are capable of instantly identifying what each student’s strengths and weaknesses are, where they could be, and what immediate steps and actions should be taken to make them better. They have ESP. And they are capable of improvising on the fly; if A doesn’t work, then move on to B, try C, etc. A lot of times teaching is just conveying information as accurately and succinctly as possible. It’s also important that you convey that you care about your student. “Master coaching is more art than science.”
The four virtues of master coaching are:
1. Matrix - “the vast grid of task-specific knowledge that distinguishes the best teachers and allows them to creatively and effectively respond to a student's efforts”
2. Perceptiveness: Being able to figure out other people at a glance.
3. GPS Reflex: being able to give brief directions at the exact right time.
4. Theatrical Honest: Exaggerating reactions to successes and mistakes.
