Patrice-Coyle-Ch. 8-9

 Chapter 8

Summary

First off, the beginning of the chapter made me want to watch Oceans 11. The main takeaways I found from this chapter include (1) teach according to your student's needs (2) don't determine a student's success based on a single lesson (3) give instruction more than you give praise or displeasure (4) teach in a loving manner that sparks ignition. The examples of teaching according to your student's needs were great. Hans Jensen knew what each student needed and how to execute that practice. I also found the story of John Wooden inspiring. Even though it may have seemed he did not prepare for practice sessions he over prepared. He planned out every minute, and I find that very important.

Application

I want to work on knowing what my students will need . Write down what we worked on in lessons, what worked well, phrases that clicked. Because I am not teaching now, I think the best way to practice this is to apply it to my own lessons. Write down what I worked on, what worked well, and what I can practice.

Chapter 9

Summary

This chapter is a great blueprint, as the chapter implies. The four virtues include the matrix, perceptiveness the GPS reflex, and theatrical honesty. What I liked about the matrix section is the idea of continuous learning. I believe it is very important to keep learning and growing. If you don't know something as a teacher, can't find a good way to teach a student, learn and discover new ways. Perceptiveness and awareness is key to helping a student feel comfortable and have a willingness to be vulnerable. The GPS reflex is a great technique. I think it is very effective and helpful because the need for compliments and praise is taken out. Lastly theatrical honesty. I think this is helpful in some cases, but can become complicated when applied incorrectly.

Application

I want to be better at the GPS technique. I really like this idea of teaching the principles and skills needed, and not focusing on praise or critique. I think as I listen to my lessons I want to apply this type of analysis to my observations.
