Saige-Coyle-Ch10

 Saige-Coyle-Ch10

As I read this short chapter, I thought it was really interesting how they talked about Tom Martinez and his ability to automatically connect with people when he meets them. That is pretty important for us as teachers to be able to do that, even if it’s in a choral classroom. My mom, I believe, is really good at that kind of stuff, and anyone can see that whether she is teaching at school or not—she teaches business, marketing, and fashion. She recognizes personality types and tendencies (both good and bad), which helps her better understand others’ motivation to learn and what helps them learn best. It also made her an amazing mother to me and my sister. She is a very firm person, but she is also very loving and full of joy and laughter (yet she claims she’s not empathetic). I’ve looked up to her example ever since I was young, and she’s part of the reason I have always wanted to become a teacher.

Saige-Coyle-Epilogue (just in case anyone’s desperate)

I read the epilogue just for fun, and I loved how he made connections to education and psychology and such. He even included a parenting perspective of myelin and encouraging your children to have a good attitude about failure and how to learn from it. As a kid, I bet I would have loved to have this kind of resource, because I grew up as a perfectionist who thought that I had to have perfect grades right now. What I needed to learn, though, was how to be comfortable asking questions or opening up to someone when I don’t understand something. I also grew up in an area with some alright teachers and others who clearly did not enjoy their jobs, so I was not sure what to expect. This section tied everything together very well, and I am glad I read it!
