The best way to stay vocally healthy is to take preventative measures that will promote overall well-being. Singers should speak and sing in healthy ways, as well as use food and drugs that will not hurt voice production. Find a laryngologist that you trust and visit them even when healthy so that they have a base reading. One of the best ways to help with vocal damage is to stop speaking or singing for a period of time, depending on the severity. Some of the vocal injuries mentioned can be ruinous, but many allow singers to fully recover and continue a career of singing.
Application:
This helped me see ways that I could improve my overall daily routine to stay more vocally healthy. I don't always think about how things like sleep and over-the-counter drugs might affect my voice. It was interesting to read that nodules are more common in women and rare in men. As I practice, I can better pay attention to sensations that may be abnormal, or added breathiness in the sound that might be the result of vocal damage. This is also something I can listen for in others to help them correct or avoid unhealthy damage, as well as seek help they may need for further healing.
