Vocal sound includes lots of overtones, called harmonics. The harmonic series falls into the intervallic sequences “P8 (octave), P5, P4, M3, m3, m3, M2, M2, M2, M2, m2.” Typically, everything you need to worry about falls within the first five. Knowing how harmonics work with your voice will help you become a more efficient singer. A singers formant is rarely used in commercial or popular styles as you rely on a microphone whereas in some musical theater you night use a sound thats has more ring to it. The ringing quality is one where you have to be able to project the voice without help from electronic amplification.
Application: There is so much more to the voice than I realize, and I am discovering that in greater depth every time I learn about it. I want to apply this information by really listening more intently as I hear myself sing as well as others sing. Especially when it comes to the ringing it talked about or needing amplification, I want to listen and see if I can hear this.
