Courtney-Voice Lesson Week of 9/27/2021

Lesson 9/24/2021

·       Exercise Lip Buzz 1-3-5-8-5-3-1

o   Lips regulate the flow of air to keep it continuous and steady

o   Tongue up against roof of the mouth, think [i]

o   Let pitches ride on the air

o   Keep head looking forward rather than turning

o   Let high notes be in the upper register (floaty)

·       Exercise /a-wow-a-wow-wow/ 54321

o   Let lips and tongue gently articulate so the jaw can stay released and open

·       Exercise [a-o-u] 9 note scale

o   Let it be faster instead of being too careful

o   Stay moving and energized through-out all pitches, even those in the middle voice

·       Exercise [i-i-i] 12321

o   Just go for it

o   Taller/stretched up and down, compressed side to side

o   Use a really bright, forward [i] to find the released tongue then stretch/compress it

o   Healthy air flow is essential to a stabilized larynx without using excess muscle

o   The top (throat up) is soft and supple floating on a stable column of air and core muscles

·       Exercise [a-ha-ha-ha] 123456787654321

o   Each note is markado, vigorous and energized with vibrato

o   Abdomen is supple and bouncy

o   Bounce off of your core

o   Like a belly laugh

o   Cracking and instability show that our larynx is trying to work it out, don’t be afraid of it

o   Open your mouth

o   Think the vowel

o   Keep the breath the same every note, let the openness of the bottom note stay strough out, it’s always getting taller and deeper

o   Be generous with breath and energy

o   It’s okay if I need to take more breaths

o   Focused vowels act like a small hole in a balloon, letting the leak out consistently

·       Exercise [iiiaaai] 1358531

o   Umlaut the [i], focus on the vowels

o   Let the breath energy come from deep in you

o   Keep the [a] tall

o   Make an ugly/slightly nasally [i] then stretch it up and down

o   I’ve been compressing my [i] too far back, compress it at my front teeth

o   Fill the front of your mouth with the [i] and your tongue

·       Laurie’s Song To Work On

o   Use the first attempt rule and just go, don’t overthink it

o   Increase the breath energy and legato, don’t increase air pressure

o   “tall as this fence” rhythm

o   “meant” grow on the fermata

§  Open your mouth so the air has somewhere to go

Let it resonate where it wants.
