Logan Kelley-McCoy-Ch 3

Summary: Breathing is the power source for our ability to sing if everything lines up. Most of the muscles that aid with breathing are voluntary and can learn to be controlled. There are different methods of breathing that utilize various areas of the lungs and are more or less effective. Most singers have found they are most comfortable with some combination of thoracic and abdominal breathing. This coordinated effort and relaxation of the abdomen should work to create even air pressure that keeps the vocal area relaxed.

Application: This chapter is helpful in knowing exactly how the breath should work. This helps me identify within myself and students times when the breath may not be working in the even, sustained way that it should. Knowing the specific muscle groups can help me identify where I am feeling tension and release, especially since I tend to hold a lot of tension within the abdominal region. I have known that there are differences in breathing before, but it was helpful in this chapter to see teaching methods that are effective, those that don't work, and to know the different breathing types and their effects on singing.
