Kennan Thompson-McCoy-Ch. 3

Chapter 3 Summary: Breathing is the key to singing. If your breathing is weak, it's going to lead to weak singing. There is so much that goes into breathing than just the lungs. Our spine is an important part of breathing. Because there is a natural curve to our spine, we should focus on keeping a straight spine (but not unnaturally straight). In order to breathe, we must expand our lungs to allow air to enter through. Air coming into the lungs is never the cause of expansion. Regardless, the goal of breath is to give the singer a sound that can be supported without the strenuous use of neck muscles. It should be air movement that creates a sound.

Application: Breathing is such an important part of singing. I wish I would have known this forever ago. I think understanding how our students breathe is an important part of teaching them. Also, knowing the anatomy of it all helps in knowing precisely what my body is doing so I can recognize where I may be falling short in getting a good solid breath. Maybe my spine isn't held high so some of my muscles are contracted and I can't get a good breath. Maybe I'm sucking in air, rather than expanding my lungs (and my ribs) to allow air to come in naturally. There is so much that goes into breathing, it's almost overwhelming!
