Summary:
This chapter talks about healthy vocal use and the disorders that can occur with inappropriate voice use. Many of the steps one should take to maintain a healthy voice are standard health advice. For example, staying hydrated, eating a healthy, balanced diet, washing hands, exercising, avoiding drugs, smoking, and alcohol, wearing a seat belt, and getting adequate sleep. In addition it is important for singers to sing and speak in a healthy manner. It is also important be careful of NSAIDS, throat clearing, coughing and prolonged whispering or yelling. With misuse or abuse singers can develop swelling, nodules, polyps, hemorrhage and other disorders that impact the singing and/or speaking voice. Other diseases such as HPV, HIV, and the common cold can also impact that functionality of the vocal tract. Application:
It is important to understand these disorders as a voice teacher for a couple reasons. For one, we need to be aware of changes in our students' voices so that we can help monitor for healthy voices. If a student loses a large part of their range, starts to experience dysphonia, or loses some agility it may be a sign that they have some kind of vocal disorder. Knowing the risks and causes of these disorders can also help us teach our students how to keep their voices as healthy as possible.
