Kennan Thompson - Coyle - Chapters 8&9

 Chapter 8 Summary:

This chapter was about meticulous coaching. I'm a big sports fan and have always been a huge fan of Coach Wooden's. Coyle talked about how Wooden never lectured the team or gave big pregame pump up speeches. When he would speak he would give simple words of instruction. Everything he said was snippets of instruction. He also would show the team the correct way to do something once, then show them an incorrect way once, then show them the correct way again. More importantly, he would direct his coaching to the individual. Coyle also mentioned a cello teacher that would teach to the individual. He would show the students exactly what they needed. If he wanted the student to play with more passion, he would be more passionate. If he knew the student was scared and overwhelmed, he would relax and give the student simple instruction. It is all about teaching to the individual person.

Application:

This is the kind of teacher that I want to be. One who is not longwinded and teaches to the individual. We will get all sorts of different students in our classrooms or studios. If we teach them in a cookie cutter fashion then we might get some students who turn out pretty well, but most students won't feel a connection with you or, consequently, with the subject. Each student is different and different things will resonate with that student. I also want to be very precise in my instruction. I'll admit, I don't remember a lot of the fluff that coaches and teachers have given me in the past. I do remember their pointed instruction.

Chapter 9 Summary:

This chapter focuses on the four virtues of master coaching: The Matrix, Perceptiveness, The GPS Reflex, and Theatrical Honesty. The Matrix is this idea of having a vast knowledge of something that has the capacity to go deeper. The teacher can make many different connections with the subject to help their students understand. Perceptiveness is to customize teaching to the student. Learn about them and learn about their needs. If they need more criticism to get bet, you can criticize appropriately. If they need more praise, praise appropriately. The GPS Reflex is the idea of giving pointed instruction right when the student needs it. These are bursts of instruction, quickly. Theatrical Honesty is give your students exactly what they need but in an honest way. In some ways, you may need to act a certain way to help the student.

Application:

These are great practices to teaching. I think the one that resonates with me is the idea of Theatrical Honesty. In some ways, teaching is acting. You're not always going to be thrilled about teaching, or motivated to teach, but we can't really let our students know that we don't want to teach them. Sometimes we have to act a certain way to help our students. However, this does not mean we lie to the student. We should always be honest and give the students what they need.
