Kaylee Borchert-Coyle-Ch.8-9

Chapter 8: The teachers listened more then they talked, instead they used small and very targeted adjustments. Jensen taught to think with your head, to “sink” a piece of music. You have to not only practice but practice with your head and brain. Jensen didn’t just tell them what to do, but he became what they needed to be! This chapter also covers the wizards secret which I loved when they talked about short and punctuated comments instead of long lengthy lectures. It also discusses the whole part method, this means he had his players do the whole move and then went back and broke it down.

Application: I think something I want to take from this is to use my brain and intentionally practice! I also love the idea of “the wizard secret” and the comments being more targeted and simpler. I think letting my teacher know I need comments more target and not so wide would help me to understand her and help us work better together in the critiques.

Chapter 9: Becoming a great teacher isn’t magic. Great teachers can focus and then create a targeted message for their students! Knowledge, recognize, and connect. Your voice can be powerful but if you cannot connect to music then it doesn’t matter. It takes a lot of hard work! It also discusses the matrix, perceptiveness, and the gps reflex.

Application: This chapter is so comforting because I want to eventually start teaching hopefully soon and it seems so daunting! Like where do I even start, but just reading that it’s okay, it’ll take time, but that it’s just about learning and teaching as you go. The other thing I loved is the part that talked about connecting to your music because this is something that has always been so key in my performing experiences.
