3. Take a deep breath that extends all the way to the pelvic floor and exhale by bringing your lips together and gently pushing the air through creating a sound like air exiting a balloon. Once comfortable with this sensation and duration, start adding sound to the exhale by going from a high pitch to a low pitch, and vice versa. After doing this a few times begin to add pitches on a scale and arpeggios.
4. The goal of this exercise is to develop breath control, support, and connection. If a student is struggling to make or sustain this ecercise it is a clear indication that they do not have good breath support and can remedy it by either breathing deeper, correcting posture, or thinking (or not thinking) about their exhale. When adding pitches to this exercise it also helps to relax the laryngical muscles to relax the sound production in the vocal folds.
