This week for master class, we had a special guest speaker, Noa. Today he talked about performance anxiety. He told us to self evaluate at the beginning of class and think about what tendencies we have when we are nervous. Some of mine are circulation issues to my hands so they go numb, clammy hands, issues with resonance not locking in, focusing in on one spot and not moving, and the nerves messing with my vibrato.
He said that each of us has a zone where we optimally function. Where do I perform the best? He thinks probably under slight anxiety we perform the best. Excitement and anxiety have many of the same feelings. How do you perform when you are excited? (For me usually pretty good).
He also talked about the difference between internal anxiety and physical anxiety. We probably want to have low internal anxiety and moderate physical anxiety to perform the best.
Idea to manage intellectual anxiety: Get a routine and stick to it. 2 physical elements and 1 intellectual activity. Perhaps for physical release tension and focus on breathing. For mental imagine yourself singing your first phrase perfectly (concentrate on how it feels to sing in that place by reflecting on past experiences). Don't try to think about too many things.
