Tanner Pruett - McCoy - Ch. 10

 Chapter 10: Hearing

In this chapter, McCoy begins by discussing the three sections of the ear: The outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear collects and transmits sound through the auditory canal to the ear drum, causing it to vibrate. The middle ear is an air filled region that mechanically amplifies and transfers sound to the inner ear. The inner ear is a fluid filled region which maintains balance and converts sound vibrations to nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. There are two ways to hear your own voice: Through the air and through the larynx to the inner ear. It is important to keep these types of hearing in mind because second kind of sound is not an accurate reflection of what people around you are hearing when you speak/sing. It is important for us to understand hearing as voice teachers so that our students and ourselves can learn critical listening. We should teach our students how to critically listen to recordings of themselves and compare the recordings to what they were hearing/feeling when they were recording it. This self-awareness is one of the best ways for the singer to improve quickly and efficiently.
