My lesson today focused on final preparations for my recital preview tomorrow. Some of the warm-ups that were most helpful were:
[tu to] back and forth with each sustaining three tones. 8 10 8 7 9 7 6 8 6 5 7 5 4 6 4 3 5 3 2 4 2 1 3 1.
[a] quickly bouncing back and forth in the following pattern 5351535153515351
Starting by saying "uh huh" in my lower register, sliding up to a high point in my range, and sliding down on the pattern 5 4 3 2 1 on [o].
I ended up doing a straight run-through of all eleven songs on my recital. We didn't pause for feedback at all and instead just did a little bit of work at the end identifying key areas to keep in mind while warming up tomorrow. As I was singing through, I noticed that I was less emotionally connected than I had been in previous times. We identified a key emotion to guide the performance of each song that I can keep in mind in relation to the overall arc. I'm going to spend time before the preview meditation and reviewing this story.
I noticed early on that I was tight through the abs which was hindering my breathing. I did some to work on this between sets, then at the end we worked on singing in alternate positions so that this area would relax. One of the side effects of this was that I was struggling to get the resonance to land in a great place, which caused some tension in the last three songs. We identified a strategy that helped me to find the right resonance right form the first song. There are a few moments where the vowels line up well for this, then it is easier to keep that feeling through the rest of the recital once I find it for the first time. We didn't do much other work just so that I would feel mentally ready and not overthink too much going into the preview tomorrow.
