Courtney-McCoy- Chapter 10

Summary and Application:

There is disagreement among voice teachers about how much students should listen to their singing. Some argue that we shouldn't listen at all and should just feel it, while other's say that listening is the most important part of healthy voice production. The truth is we must listen to ourselves to some extent. This auditory feedback loop helps keep us in tune, and can help us recognize issues and correct them. It is also important to remember that what we hear from ourselves isn't always the best indicator and we must find ways to filter our feedback. This might include plugging one ear in a classical setting, or using a microphone in a musical theatre or CCM setting. It is always important to be aware however, that you are mitigating high sound levels to avoid hearing damage.
