Courtney-Master Class and Voice Lesson Week of 10/4/2021

Voice Lesson 10/1

  • Exercise: 8531 [u]
    • stretch in the back molars, small, round sound and small, round lips
    • start the air first, think, trust, let the pitch
  • Exercise: 54321 [va]
    • start the air with the [v] and then let [a] also be carried on the air
    • imagine the tongue releasing back into the throat
    • notice what muscles released and therefore what wasn't needed to stabilize your larynx
  • Exercise: 54321 [bla]
    • let the jaw and tongue release and just focus on movement/air energy and where the vowel is going
  • Exercise: 12321 [ʒ]
    • a good amount of [ʃ] on breath energy in it
    • forte
  • 531 [vein] or [ʃeim]
    • let it be carried out on the air, don't press or push it
    • use 1st consonant to encourage air flow
    • let air energy move through middle voice
    • bring the lightness from the top down
    • e brings tongue forward
    • let the [e] pop/release open in the jaw right away
  • Attente
    • clap and speak the words at a higher pitch to work on tricky rhythm measures
    • intone the French with equal length/accent on each syllable also at a higher pitch
      • this takes more breath energy, that is okay
    • memorize your music while you're conducting
    • Adjust the notes leading up to the high notes, not necessarily the high note
      • make sure they're present
      • focus the vowels
      • The path of the passaggio has to move up through the front of the face
      • think that each of them has a little bit of [i] in it
      • open your mouth Courtney
      • las = [las]
    • Leave the core of my voice in even at "piano" moments
    • Crescendo to "etranges" and "anges"
  • Notice and acknowledge BETTER instead of always looking for perfection
  • Stand like Batman
  • Sing into your forehead
  • be generous with the breath energy
    • instead of being afraid, just go for it, have fun, feel it
  • Piano dynamic is still energized and has core to it
    • always on a forte body
  • When the pressure is balanced it feels smaller, but fuller
    • almost like there's a cap on the sound where the vowel is focused
  • Laurie's Song
    • crescendo "meant" (get applause)
    • sing through each phrase like a rainbow
    • Listen to your body about opening your mouth/stretching between your molars
    • As you sing through a phrase, it gets deeper in your body and taller
    • A little bit of [i] or [e] into all your vowels
      • in the mirror: make an [a] with your mouth then think [i] or [e] with your tongue and then watch as you sing a phrase

Master Class 10/5

  • Hayden:
    • Look Through the Port from Billy Budd
    • Diction
      • should be able to freeze frame speaking the text at any time and know what sound to IPA
      • /die/ make sure the vowels in the diphthong don't blend
      • /the/ uses [a] vowel
      • [ə] or [ʌ] with a lmnr blends= [œ]
      • pay attention to the small words
  • Tanner
    • (something about spring) Florence Price
    • Diction
      • our ears will retroactively fill in sounds so it's important to know what words need extra clear diction and which ones we can modify to make easier for singing.
