We started off with warming up, on vee vey vah vo voo exercise working on keeping the breath flowing and consistent, then we followed that with a ming exercise to get a forward placement in preparation for the high notes in one of my songs. We then did a long coloratura exercise that has a little trill and then slides down the scale ending on thee, thee to get consonance in and keeping the breath flowing through them.
We then went to O Mio Babbino Caro, we sang through it as if performing it, we then discussed a higher placement and worked on releasing the air but using a strap around a chair, the piano, and my body to help distract me so I wasn't focused on thinking of the "high notes." Instead I was distracting myself and so that my body was supporting my voice because I was engaging my core and body. We just kept working these high notes, and then sang through it a few more times working on crescendoing and de-crescendoing and then all the way through again like a performance, trying to add the pointers and things we worked on.
We then worked on With You from Ghost the Musical. I sang it through and then my teacher and I went back and reworked the things that didn't the first time. A big thing in this piece is my tendancy to tighten my jaw/tongue on the higher parts of this song, so we did the same method as before with the strap except my teacher was moving the strap as I was holding it cause then I could only focus on that which produced a much more relaxed sound!
The key thing we discussed throughout the lesson was me being scarred of the high notes thus causing me to tighten my tognue/jaw which really does hinder the sound. So, we talked about ways to over come that which currently include distraction but also being mindful of the placement while I am distracted because that is whereI need the sound to get the best tone!
