I started out with some basic warmups, mostly focusing on range and tricky intervals. Then I wrote down the melody to a song that I wrote that my friends and I are going to perform at a talent showcase. I then practiced Pietà , Signore, and I decided that this time I was going to try deep practicing like we’ve been talking about in class. So I broke the song up into sections and backstacked, stopping to fix every mistake I made. When I got to the phrase, “Non fia mai, che nell’inferno” (or however that’s spelt), I realized that I had been putting one of the notes onto the wrong syllable in both phrases. I’ve been working on this song for about a year and a half. That’s a long time to sing something wrong. So I practiced each phrase over and over, probably about 50 times each, until I felt more confident about it, both with and without piano. I’m still not 100% solid on it, but I’m doing a lot better than before. After over an hour of practicing, I stopped, not wanting to wear out my voice. I checked my phone and found myself singing the section I had practiced softly to myself. I thought, “oh no, I think I started on the wrong note.” But when I checked it on the piano, I had started and ended on exactly the right note, exactly on pitch. I was very happy that my hard work had paid off.
