Annika-Coyle-Chapters8&9

 Chapter 8

Summary: This chapter covered several teachers in talent hotbeds and why their teaching helps cultivate talent. Teachers are an integral part in the creation and growth of talent and each teacher has a different method to help growth along. Hans Jensen adapted his teaching style to each student and their very specific needs without even asking what his students needed! John Wooden taught through detailed planning, spurts of information, and modeling. Mary Epperson taught through love, praise, patience, and kindness. Each teacher used different methods to help students hone their craft, and each teacher succeeded.

Application: In my future teaching career, I’ll have to find the balance between my teacher style and what my students need in order to allow them to succeed as much as they can. At the end of the chapter, “Coyle wrote “they are creating and sustaining motivation; they are teaching love.” This is how I want to teach. I want my students to love what they are doing and love what they can do.

Chapter 9

Summary: Different subjects and different students are taught in different ways and each teacher has to find out what suits them best. The ultimate goal in teaching is to help build myelin and, overall, talent and success!

Application: As a teacher, I will have to gauge what my students need and the best way to get that across to them. I need a deep understanding of not only what I am teaching, but what they need! It will take awhile but one day it will be engrained in me.
