Amelia Kearl-Coyle-Chapter 10 & Epilogue

 Chapter 10

This chapter mainly focused on the decision an team had to make. It had to choose between two athletes, and it was a very hard decision. The board decided to call in Tom Martinez, a retired coach, to help them decide. When Martinez meets athletes he looks carefully and sees what kind of person they are and what emotion they are feeling and then responds to it. He then knows how to teach in a way that the athlete will understand. I think connection to students is really important.

It is especially important for voice teachers though. I once was talking to one of my friends and we were talking about how close you have to be with your voice teacher to really progress the most. If you trust your teacher, you are willing to not hold back even if something is weird or you are scared you are going to make a mistake. I also think that registering emotions while teaching voice lessons is really important. Because our emotions are connected so much to our instrument, negative emotions can really hinder students. Voice teachers need to be able to address these issues and have the trust of the student and connection built so they can do so.

Epilogue

Cognition: The process of thinking and gaining knowledge

Finland has extraordinary teachers. Teaching is a competitive position there. For a single position sometimes forty applicants will be considered. The high quality of teachers is the reason for Finland's success. Finland has the highest test scores in the entire world. Good teachers make a difference.

Toyota is doing really well because it is detail oriented. In the assembly line, anyone can stop it for any reason. Because they focus so much on the efficiency of the assembly line, they produce good quality cars in the best way possible. Efficiency matters.

There is a shyness clinic in California where people practice social skills. At this institution, they provide shy people with experiences that will help them get used to discomfort and learn how to do things that are challenging for them. By always doing things slightly out of their comfort zone, these people are able to progress and learn social skills. Practicing outside of your comfort zone is practicing deeply.

I really liked how Coyle applied what he learned from the master teachers to his baseball team. I think there are many different methods and ideas introduced in this book and I want to figure out which one will work for me. I really like the idea of practicing deeply and wonder how I can practice in a way to train myself to perform through my nerves. I really like the idea of running around and then singing to practice with less support. Usually when I perform I feel just about like that so practicing before hand will really help. I also want to practice on an elliptical to help me connect to my body and breathing more. If anyone has any more ideas on how to practice deeper, I would love to hear them!
