So far I'm enjoying Smith's teachings on breaking down to the most vulnerable parts of yourself in order to get to the foundation of your voice. I tend to overthink everything in lessons and in the practice room, so thinking about singing like speaking is hard for me, but I feel like it could help a lot. I get so in my head that my abilities kind of go out the window.
I also get very caught up in breathing technique. I tense up rather than relax, so my breath sometimes hitches and doesn't make it to the end of phrases, so thinking about breathing as a natural release could also help with my singing.
I really liked how he talked about how resonance can't be manufactured, but rather that we can focus on airflow and phonation and those can improve resonance. I found the resonance concepts in the last book very hard to understand and I didn't agree with all of it, at least based on my personal experiences, so Smith's explanations regarding resonance make more sense to me.
