Courtney- Smith- Ch. 1-3

Overall, I am excited about this book so far, I think it will have some really great ideas and concepts that I can use in my own teaching and in my own practicing. The introduction bugged me a little bit because he spent so much time talking about authenticity. While I think that authenticity is an essential and powerful concept for everyone's life, he makes it sound like everyone has something that is just right for them and that live authentically is to find and do that thing no matter what. I disagree on that point. I think that we have to choose what's important to use, what we want to do, how we're going to do it, and be honest and upfront about those choices. In my opinion, there is a lot more choice involved in what makes us who we are than what he said.

I liked reading about how the vocal tract works from another point of view. It helped make the whole thing much clearer for me, and helped me realize some things I hadn't before. For example, I hadn't ever considered that the only resonators we can change are the mouth and pharynx. Now I realize that this has a lot of implications for singing. It's also interesting to read a different perspective on the aspects of singing. Where McCoy had four or five elements, Smith seems to have 2: phonation and articulation.
