Chapter 5 Summary: There is more to our sound than just our fundamental pitch. There are harmonics involved. This is important to know when we are listening to the way that we sound, it's not just the pitch that we are singing that is coming out. The sound that comes from your mouth is created from laryngeal buzz. In a male's voice, the first harmonic can be the weakest aspect of the sound the audience hears. Vowels are formants that can boost different pitches giving them resonance. In order to have a consistent sound, the larynx should remain low and relaxed.
Application: This is important to know, especially while you are singing some higher passages that you may struggle with. In some cases, the vowel that you are trying to sing is a difficult vowel at that pitch. Exploring with similar formants will help you discover what vowel may be best to use in that situation. If I'm singing "bad" and the [ae] is just kicking my butt, I may want to think about changing it to "bod" [a].
