Chapter Four
The vocal folds are really small. Pitch is altered by little muscles called the thyroarytenoids and the cricothyroids.
Application: knowing how the larynx is set up can be helpful in knowing what is going on in my vocal apparatus (or that of a student), and knowing what should be happening for a safe and healthy singing voice.
Chapter Five
Our voice sounds rather different to us than it does to an audience. Harmonics are amplified slightly differently in varying voices, and resonances are different in different people's voices as well. Much of how our voice sounds depends on formants (vocal tract resonances).
Male passaggio- don't change anything to access head voice.
Female upper passaggio- Ibid., basically
Application: while a lot of this was effectively gibberish to me and I maybe should reread it when I'm not tired, I think I learned the value of formants and focusing on resonance.
