Chapter 4 Summary: The larynx is an incredible instrument used to help humans phonate. It honestly is quite remarkable. Until recently, most people referred to our vocal folds has vocal cords. This is not an accurate way of depicting them. Folds are a much more accurate representation. The steps that go into phonation are quite extensive, but happen at such a quick rate. “No muscle in the human body is able to contract and relax at anything close to that rate.” This is pretty amazing!
Application: It is important to know what your body is doing while you sing. It is also important to know how remarkable it is that our voice can even sing in the first place! Knowing the anatomy of the larynx and vocal folds will help me as a teacher be able to recognize where unhealthy singing may be taking place. It will also help me know why it is happening and exercises that will help the body correct those unhealthy habits.
