Chapter 8
Summary
-There are many different ways to describe the different registers that are used to sing higher and lower pitches. For the purpose of the chapter, McCoy has summed up all the different registers into two different modes of singing. He uses the term Mode 1 to describe the lower registration that tends to resonante in the chest. He uses the term Mode 2 to describe the higher register that tends to resonate in the head. Although Mode 1 tends to sit on lower notes and Mode 2 tends to sit on higher notes, they are not exclusive to those pitches and can overlap.
Application
-Knowing the differences between these registers can help us to utilize the tool in our own voices but also in the voices of the students that we teach. Knowing where these registers are can help our students to access it for their benefit in the songs that they sing both stylistically and also just practically to get the best sound. I thought the bit about the differences between men and women in their use of these registers can help me be aware as a teacher of how my students are singing and where the sound is resonanting.
