Chapter 7
Summary
-This chapter includes descriptions, causes, and treatments of voice disorders and any other pathological issue one could have with their voice. It also provides ways to have good vocal hygiene. Suggestions for good vocal hygiene include speaking with good resonance, singing with good technique at all times, moderating how long you sing at a time, getting a good night's sleep, staying hydrated, using good hygiene in general, avoiding the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and the use of illeagal substances, staying physically fit and not having eating disorders, practicing safe sex, wearing a seatbealt to avoid traumatic injury, not singing when ill, and knowing a good laryngologist. Voice disorders include: Laryngitis (fungal, viral, steroid myashtenia), Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD). Most suggestions on how to treat these disorders include vocal rest, and visiting your favorite laryngologist. Lesions and masses that can occur on or near your vocal folds include Vocal fold hemorahges, polyps, vascular ectasias, nodules, cysts, contact ulcers and granulomas. Additional disorders and problems include STI's, vocal fold paralysis, cancer, laryngeal papilloma, as well as vocal issues that occur with hormonal changes. Treatments of these issues vary and you should always visit a laryngologist for these to get them resolved.
Application
-It is important to teach our students and ourselves good vocal hygiene so as to avoid most of the issues that can occur with our vocal folds from misuse or abuse of our voice. It is also important to know about these so that we can recognize them in our students or ourselves if they ever occur.
