Recital Hour October 19
Tim S
He is able to utilize resonant space very effectively. He makes good use of the space to tell the emotional story. He is engaged through each moment. I noticed an acoustical shift around what I think is D5 where the sound seemed to slip into a different spot. Right below there was where it seemed to be consistently sitting the best. He backed off for dramatic effect at times, especially when it was lower. I would be curious to see what this is like with a little more of a spoken quality in these areas.

There are times when she sits in a really nice resonant pocket. This especially occurs as the sound moves higher. When it doesn’t get there the sound gets a little breathy, which could also be from a lack of depth as well. There were a few notes right in the middle that felt like the sweet spot.
Faith B
I love the tone that she has. It seems consistent throughout the song. I think the singing would also be more expressive if she performed with more emotion. The phrases lose some motion because she seems so focused on one spot. The whole body needs to believe the story.
Collin C
This sound is pretty nasal. I can’t tell if that is intentional with the style of the song or not. At the moments when he was focused on the guitar the singing lost some connection. It felt like there were two distinct sounds: one in the lowest register and one in the middle area of his voice. The higher the sound went, the more nasal it wanted to be.
Julia C
The first few notes of each phrase had so much breath there was hardly any sound. I think this was stylistic, but for a performance it would work better either recorded or with a mic. The jump to the high notes was very pure. I would love more of that purity throughout the rest of the sound.
Meghan H
I think I commented on this last time, but she has such a warm sound which is not what I am used to on this sound but it works well. She is still able to access a really free in-the-face sound as she works higher. As the song went on it evened out and both aspects of the range connected more. The sound at the end might benefit for a bit more mix as opposed to belt.
Mary B
She performed this like a folk artist would, which is fitting for the song. I would love to get a little more sound on the lower end, especially in this environment. The sound seems more private than public. I think she is getting a lot more than is being turned out to us as the listeners. Because of this, sometimes it sounds a little too light.
