Patrice-Coyle-Ch. 5-7

 Chapter 5

Summary

Chapter 5 was focused on primal cues and ignition. Coyle shared 3 examples of these primal cues: "if she can do it why can't I?", the tiny powerful idea, flipping the trigger, and o lucky me. I especially liked the study shared in the section on tiny powerful ideas. It is fascinating to see how the idea of how long you will play an instrument will spark that ignition. I also loved the expansion of Clarissa's story in correlation with flipping the trigger. I could imagine hat interest switch as she listens to her teacher play the jazz arrangement.

Application

I think the biggest application I want to do is find what was my ignition to begin and pursue music and what are things igniting my passion now to continue and and practice. I want to write it down and truly explore that side of me so see why I love performing, why I've always wanted to be a teacher of some sort, and why music makes such an impact in my life. I also want to focus on discovering my student's ignition. Why do they want to be taking lessons? What pushes them to practice? How can I help them find their ignition and passion?

Chapter 6

Summary

Chapter 6's focus was keeping the motivation ignition lit. I thoroughly enjoyed the example given of the Curacao baseball players, essentially what is it that begins the ripple effect. I think the struggle is sustaining ignition which is what the second section of this chapter dives a bit more into. This section talks about the motivation comes from seeing the works of others around you. This bit of healthy comparison sparks and sustains motivation- you can't be successful if you don't keep working. Lastly, words can make or break you. I think it is so important to see and recognize what we are saying and how we view ourselves and others. When we put our success on our intelligence we limit our growth and progression.

Application

I want to work on how I speak to myself. I really need to change my outlook on my talents because the way I speak to and encourage myself will make or break my confidence. I know this will be helpful in my practice habits and help me know how to talk to and encourage my students more.

Chapter 7

Summary

To be honest, I was a bit skeptical of this chapter a first. I wasn't impressed wit the first description of KIPP. I felt it was too harsh and too focused on the small things, but after reading about the reasoning (primal cues of belonging to a group, group is together in a strange and dangerous world, and the new world is shaped like a mountain with paradise at the top), I was a bit more understanding of this concept. It makes a difference for students when they know what is expected of them.

Application

I think my biggest application would be to set a routine and stick to it, finding people to be accountable for. I also want to have an approachable strictness in my teaching habits. Like I mentioned earlier, routine and expectations make or break the ignition.
