Kaylee Borchert-Coyle-Ch.5-7

Chapter 5: Growing a skill requires energy, passion, and commitment. "This is who I want to be" --that passion comes form the outside world, it isn't necessarily an inner quality. McPherson's graph shows that it is not exactly the length of time but your attitude that you have before and going into your practice! Long term commitment and high levels of practicing showed skyrocketed skills. In order to develop a talent you have to practice deeply, deep practice requires lots of energy, primal cues trigger the outpooring of energy... It is all so necessary in order to develop a talent.

Application: I loved when he said "this is who I want to be," honestly this is something that hit me because I realized am I putting in the effort for who I want to be? I don't just want to be good, I want to be great so Im I spending the necessary time and commitment to become someone that is great at sing. I want to apply this by using this to motivate me, who do I want to be?

Chapter 6: Keeping the fire lit, we have to develop sustained ignition. This fire is either on or off and we have to decide how to keep it lit. It can often be triggered by signals, especially the words we use. Similarly, Coyle discusses how skill building also builds confidence.

Application: I want to apply this by trying to keep this motivation I am feeling to kick start this semester, I need to keep the fire and passion and love I have for music and use that to keep me going. Yes, it gets difficult but if I love it enough I will want to keep the "fire lit".

Chapter 7: Knowledge Is Power Program, their slogan was work hard, be nice.  It took time but they all applied this slogan as they came together they started excelling. Coyle also discusses how the KIPP knew that every detail mattered, everything is connected and is important. Mistakes happen, and they knew they'd mess up but what they had they earned!

Application: Mistakes are okay, especially in practice but take the mistakes and learn and grow, use them to excel. Nothing in life comes easy, but the work and the effort will all be worth it. I want to apply this mentality to my practicing!
