Tanner Pruett "Uncle Ronnie": I thought the first run through of the piece was wonderful! The connection to the text was on point for the entirety of the piece and I thought his breath was able support through each of the phrases. I thought what Thomas did as far as working with Tanner was magic! Here are some things that stood out to me: What do you want us to believe while you're singing this? What do you want us to know? "I want to hear your consonants as well as your vowels." This helps to make the phrasing not so choppy as well. There was such a change when Tanner emphasized the tempo change. Rests are never rests. They convey suppressed emotion. I liked how Thomas had Tanner take different types of breath. The difference between the "oo" vowel was huge! Rather than having it in the back of the throat, the tongue was moved forward making it a more resonant and pointed sound.
Josh Rogers "Giants in the Sky": Great voice! The piece is fun and quick and Josh did a great job evoking the character as well as not getting lost in the text. It can be easy to be so focused on the text that you don't become the character singing it. You just recite it, but Josh did awesome not letting that happen. One thing that I did notice that in the first run through his breath didn't continue on through the end of the phrase. Some of the phrases got super quiet at the end because of the lack of support and there ended up being some laryngeal tightness. That can be especially challenging during a long run of quick text. However, the second time was much better. I think he wasn't as nervous. A few things that stood out to me: "Keep your glasses on and do it again." If there's less of a focus with your eyes, then there is less of a focus with your voice. "Put on your bass coat." Thomas had Josh slow down the song so he could really emphasize that "bass" sound. Which isn't technically a "bass" sound, it's just a more mature sound with a strong support from the entire body. It helps to just say "a bass sound" because it's easy to visualize what that means. There was a huge difference in sound when Josh dug deep within his body. It sounded awesome!
