Summary: Chapter 7 starts out with the topic of “spontaneous
combustion” where we return to speech as the foundation of this exercise. Spontaneous
combustion happens when we are poised (calm, collected, still, and ready). This
deals with the onset of the sound, since it impacts the rest of the following
phrase. Chapter 8 starts with the idea of “the wobble.” Essentially, it
promotes freedom for the vocal folds to fluctuate between high and low pitches
with fluidity and ease. Chapter 9 focuses on the sixth invention, titled “getting
high.” It is a synthesis of all the previous exercises in addition to further
refining. The goal is to have the voice easily navigate between the extremes of
chiaro and oscuro. It also involves increasing the upper ranges
of the voice to reach its greatest potential.
Key words:
Perfect technique – the ability to sing from a pure falsetto to a full-voiced,
ringing, balanced sound on any pitch and on any vowel without feeling or
hearing where the shift between the two happens.
Application: Once again, there is a key focus on freedom and letting go of control. Allowing the voice to go where it needs to go without feeling strained.
