We express ourselves by making sounds through either speaking or singing. Musical sounds require a generator, a vibrator, and a resonator. Speaking involves all parts of our humanity, it includes the physical, acoustical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological selves. Speaking is a complex process. Breathing allows us to calm emotions, eliminate pain, focus, and connect to our bodies. Both speaking and breathing are ingredients to singing. I love the simplicity within these chapters, they cover the basics but the basics are literally essential to singing.
