Ah, articulation! A lot of the things we talk about in this chapter remind me of the things we discuss often in my voice lessons. For instance, I occasionally have trouble with my jaw coming forward, which gets in the way of my articulation and causes tension in my voice overall. As a result, the soft palate collapses, and my vibrato does not ring out like it’s meant to. One of the big things about articulation, besides the anatomy of what allows it to happen, is it plays a big role in how we convey the songs we are singing. This is especially prevalent in diction-driven music, such as that of musical theatre. It was really interesting to look at how and why we talk about the different parts of our mouth and how one little adjustment makes a big difference for how we sing, and this includes other parts besides the jaw and the soft palate.
