Chapter 9 Summary:
An important part of singing is articulation. Articulation is "how the tongue and jaw move to create sounds and phonemes in speech and singing." Even in creating vowels, tongue placement is what creates that sound. A lot of the muscles in the mouth are connected with each other. Tension in the tongue can lead to issues with the soft palate. Tension in the jaw can lead to tension in the larynx. Something else that is important about the jaw is that we have a hinged jaw. When you open your mouth wide open, some people can feel their jaw click. When we sing, we should have our jaw swing back rather than move forward.
Application:
This is important to know when diagnosing an issue in a students voice. If they are having larynx problems, maybe the root of the problem is a tense jaw. Tongue placement is also very important to know as a teacher. In young singers, the tendency can be to let the tongue slip back into their mouth rather than keeping it forward.
