Höglund- McCoy- Ch. 8-10

Chapter 8 is about registration.

A register is a collection of contiguous pitches, produced the same way physically, all having the same (similar) timbre.

Chest voice can be called mode 1. Head voice is mode 2. Different modes are used in different ways depending on the voice.

Application:

For our students as well as for ourselves, it's vital that we know about where to use which registers. If we use the wrong register for the wrong situation, we can hurt our voice. I don't want to ruin some poor student's voice.

Chapter 9 is about articulation.

Jaw!

Tongue!

Pharynx!

Palate!

With the powers of the muscles of these four parts of the human body, we articulate! Knowing how these different muscle groups can affect sound and ease of singing can help us determine how best to help a budding singer (including ourselves) to sing without any of that horrid tension that so plagues our voices.

Chapter 10: hearing.

Singing is all about making noises, so being able to hear/listen a certain way is important to being sure that we are making the right noises at a given time.

This chapter talks a lot about the inner workings and structure of the ear. I know it's important, and I can tell that all the little parts way up in there are fragile and whatever, but I'm struggling to find a good application for this stuff. Take care of your ears? I reckon I can stop listening to music so loud.
