Laryngitis: inflammation in the larynx
Hemorrhage: when blood vessels break in the vocal fold- causes fold to not oscillate properly
Polyps: a lesion or mass on one fold
Vocal nodules: a lesion that forms on both sides of the vocal fold.
Cyst: similar to polyps but instead extends deeper into the fold and is raised on the surface to an egg-like shape.
The main stuff I got from this chapter was: don't smoke, don't drink, don't do recreational drugs, use prescribed drugs carefully, be careful having sex, don't sing while you are sick, drink lots of water, get good sleep, be friends with a laryngologist, if you have a vocal problem get therapy, and be aware of menstruation and it's affects on the voice. There was a lot packed in this chapter. One of my favorite points was that if you sing while you are sick or have a vocal injury your recovery will be longer. I have such a hard time with this because I feel a lot of pressure to sing. I usually end up pushing too hard and then hurt my voice more and recover slowly. If I can just remember that my recovery will be faster if I take it easy, maybe I'll be able to tough it out and stay quiet. I also appreciated the section on prescription and over the counter drugs. I almost never use drugs of any kind. I'm not on any medications and I will not take medicine unless I'm in a ton of pain. If I am in a ton of pain (which usually happens once a month) I'll take an Ibuprofen. I knew that it had effects on the voice but I didn't realize it had effects on the voice for 48 hours. Maybe I'll look into some alternate medicines, or at least for now I'll know to be really careful the 2 days after I take an ibuprofen.
