In this exercise, the singer starts by making an unpitched "p" sound, and then only allowing a pin-prick worth of air to escape the mouth for a few seconds. The cheeks are expected to puff. The singer then sustains through into singing an "i," then sliding down a fifth and landing on an "a" sound. This exercise helps with the movement of the breath, as well as equalizing the sound across the range so that no register is too heavy or light. Consistency is built across registers.
