Logan Kelley- Coyle- Ch. 10 and Epilogue

 Chapter 10

Summary: Master coaches often live under the radar but possess a wealth of knowledge. They understand that they need to connect to their students in a way that will both ignite their passion and push them to deep practice. Each person is reached in a different way, even though the knowledge you are teaching is often fairly similar from person to person. Understand that the best students aren’t always the ones who immediately show the most promise.

Application: My big takeaway from this chapter is that I need to have several levels of connection with my students. I need to connect with them in a way that they trust me, but I also need to help them find a connection to the music. Everybody will have something different that ignites them, and I want to be able to help my students find the thing that makes them excited to sing and help them move in that direction.

Epilogue

Summary: Education is most successful when approached in a way that models deep practice. Learning phonics works because of the concept of chunking. Psychologically, improvement comes with constant action and feedback. Making conscious efforts to continue to learn will help decrease chances of experiencing dementia. The best way to help somebody succeed is to pay attention to a person’s interests and then praise them for their efforts. With students, model deep practice. Stop them, give quick feedback, and help them know how to improve.

Application: I loved how he summed up the whole book with how to be most successful as a parent. I will be sure to watch the interests of my kids, and teach them how to be learners. I think one of the best things a teacher can do is demonstrate how to practice. I have realized that some of the teachers that frustrate me are the ones who spend a lot of time practicing and don’t model deep practice. The lessons with master teachers go by quickly and are meaningful.
