For this exercise you start by singing "Ah," then you sing "Ah" up a fourth. Then you go back down, then alternate between the fourths quickly. Then you go up a half step, but you start up the fourth, then sing down the fourth, then alternate between the fourths quickly. Then you go up a half step, starting at the lower fourth and go up. You want to sing lightly up the fourth, then heavier down the fourth. The purpose of this exercise is to maintain a relaxed larynx, and as you go up the fourth to stay relaxed and not tighten up. This helps maintain a feeling of almost a yawn, with the raised soft palet.
