Chapter 8 Summary:
There can be many different definitions for the term registration, but McCoy gives a pretty clear definition. A register is comprised of consecutive pitches that have the same timbre and are produced by the same physiological manner. McCoy then goes on to describe two different modes that we have because muscles affect the pitch, not necessarily "registers." Mode 1, the vocal folds are thickened by the thyroarytenoid and creates more of a square shape. Mode 2, the vocal folds are thinned by the cricothyroid muscles and makes creates more of a triangle shape. Men and women use each of the modes differently. Most women have ranges that both of the modes can be used. Most men can use mode 1 for the majority of their range.
Application:
This is important to know what is going on physiologically as our student sing. This will help us accurately describe to our students what their voice is doing to create their sounds. It will also help us differentiate with our students knowing what works best for them. Some students will have wider ranges with certain modes and we have to know how we can help them determine that.
