Kaylee Borchert - McCoy - Ch. 4

The larynx has two purposes, first to protect the airway from foreign objects getting in your lungs. The second is to purposely block your airways to "increase intra-abdominal pressure," this helps in elimination, childbirth, and lifting.  Vocal chords are more accurately described as vocal folds, which follows how they actually look. No muscle in the body is able to relax and contract as fast as the vocal folds. the thyroarytenoid is the primary muscle responsible for low pitched sounds we often associate with "chest voice".

Application: After reading this it reminded me of how truly complex and amazing the voice and vocal folds are!! I want to be more mindful in my practicing in making sure that I am not pushing my voice, because know knowing some of the science behind when my voice feels "stress" or pressure in any way when i sing too much, I want to be more careful with my voice.
