Voice Lesson Evaluation - September 3

I typically have voice lessons on Mondays, but since I did not have a lesson Labor Day we had an early lesson the Friday before. I figured I might as well write about that one.

I’ll be honest; this was not quite my best lesson considering I had less water with me than usual, and I woke up later than normal with less time to warm up properly. As a result, it was easier for me to become tense or expect myself to feel tense. However, my teacher, Laurie Hart, was able to help me to find ways to keep the larynx low. What she would do is give me exercises that would help me find that feeling as I ascend up a scale, for instance. Often she would have me sing some higher passages (I’m a soprano) an octave lower a few times before singing it in the original octave. It did not always work the first time, but usually it did, especially when I consciously prepared for the higher note instead of automatically feeling scared of the high notes. In the meantime, I finalized a potential date for my recital!
