Amelia Kearl-Voice Recital Hour- Sept 16

What a week for Voice Recital Hour! Such wonderful emotions, sounds, and presences. I think I learned more this VRH than any other one so far. The performances today that really spoke to me were Taylor's, Tim's, and Laurence's.

Taylor Wolf-Someone Like You

Wonderful dynamics through the song that really shaped the performance

She had a light in her eyes while she performed like she was really seeing something we couldn't

She had very natural body/hand movements

Really nice released jaw

She had really nice emotion, but it was more than that. Her emotion wasn't stagnant. It moved with the dynamics and the lyrics

Tim Stewart-Confrontation

Really excellent energy!

He did such a wonderful job separating the characters! Even his vocal style changed to match the character. And he did such a wonderful job with each one I couldn't pick which character I liked him more as.

I also really liked how he engaged with the whole room. I think most of us tend to fixate on one spot but he performed for everyone.

Laurence Laureano-Losing my Mind

Wow this was so cool with the piano! It was just the right balance. The piano was simple when he sang and when he held notes or wasn't singing the piano picked up. It seemed to work great for him vocally!

He still performed really wonderfully despite having to sit and face away from some of the room.

I also noticed he was very resonant and had a full sound. Even though he was faced away from me for most of it I could still clearly hear him.

Notes for myself:

Don't let arms curve forward when singing. It closes me up and makes me look nervous and ungrounded

Focus more on breath control. There were some really lovely moments in VRH today where the breath was just so controlled and it really wowed me!

Don't look up too high

Be grounded (record myself singing so I can look at posture)

Always react emotionally to the music like it was the first time.

Overall this lesson was incredibly exciting. A lot of things I've been struggling with the last couple weeks clicked into place for me. ...
